About the Farm
Background
Over sixty years of family farming have shaped New Horizon Farm and Dairy into a second-generation operation. Founded by Donald Bickel, the farm has grown to include a herd of registered Holstein and Ayrshire cattle, with a hay and grain operation spanning over 300 acres. In May 2020, the farm expanded to include Happy Cows Creamery, which produces quality, farm-fresh dairy products for the local community.
Practices
The farm raises its cattle on pasture, ensuring they have access to fresh grass and open space. The creamery processes milk on-site using low-heat pasteurization, which preserves the cream's natural rise to the top. The farm also emphasizes transparency in its operations, knowing exactly what the herd consumes before products reach the customers. They partner with local producers who share their commitment to quality and local food.
The Rest
The farm is a family affair, with three generations of the Bickel family involved in daily operations. Donald oversees the general operation alongside his father Howard and brothers Todd and Raymond. Jackie handles marketing and assists with farm needs, while Carson feeds the baby calves. Maggie balances milk deliveries with her 4-H activities and school, and Emma manages the farm’s social media and online advertising. Visitors are encouraged, and the farm enjoys sharing its knowledge of agriculture and the dairy industry with the community.
