About the Farm
Background
Melissa Canales started the boutique microgreens farm in late 2016, driven by her passion for gardening and a desire to control what she put into her body. The farm operated for six years, becoming a familiar presence at farmers markets across San Diego. In 2023, Melissa closed the farm to move to a new city for her husband's job, transitioning her focus to sharing her knowledge online with the help of her sister Kelly.
Practices
The farm specialized in growing microgreens in living trays to ensure ideal freshness and longevity for consumers. Microgreens were chosen for their concentrated flavor, textures, and dense nutrition, and they were grown in a small space with low start-up costs. The consistent sunshine and mild temperatures of San Diego provided an ideal environment for nurturing these tiny powerhouses.
The Rest
The farm sold microgreens at multiple farmers markets, to chefs, restaurants, and directly to consumers. They also offered a 'Grow Your Own' kit and a wood tray for displaying living trays as a centerpiece or on a windowsill. Melissa and Kelly now share their expertise through a website that includes tips, recipes, and wellness advice.
