About the Farm
Background
Michelle Elston, founder and owner, has nurtured a passion for plants and flowers since childhood. After studying plant science at Cornell University, she and her husband Mike initially ran a garden center in Massachusetts for nine years. Seeking to raise their children near family, they moved back to Michelle's hometown of Carlisle, Pennsylvania. What began as a small garden has blossomed into a 10-acre farm, producing over 25,000 supermarket bouquets and numerous event arrangements annually. Sixteen years later, Michelle's vision of a thriving flower farm has become a reality, deeply rooted in her family's heritage.
Practices
Flowers are grown sustainably and selected for their ability to thrive in the local region. The farm's philosophy emphasizes celebrating the natural beauty of each season, with all bouquets and buckets crafted exclusively from flowers grown on the farm. This approach results in timeless, fresh, and unique designs. Michelle's commitment to sustainability and seasonality ensures that the farm works harmoniously with the land and its natural cycles.
The Rest
Roots Cut Flower Farm operates within a 100-mile radius, selling flowers to supermarkets, florists, and at the Farmers on the Square Farmers Market in Carlisle, PA. The farm is not open to the public, and all inquiries and orders must be submitted online. Michelle also offers consulting and tours to share her knowledge with other farmers and serves as treasurer of the Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers (ASCFG). The farm's mission is to be an environmentally sustainable, financially viable, and family-centered business within the community.
