About the Farm
Background
Since 1996, this 34-acre farm on the southwest edge of Lincoln has been raising vegetables and selling them at local markets, retail stores, and restaurants in Lincoln and Omaha. In 1997, the farm became certified organic and maintained this certification for 16 years. In 2006, they expanded to include goat milking and cheese production.
Practices
The farm employs sustainable farming methods, avoiding GMO seeds and chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides not approved for organic use. They utilize hoop-houses to extend the growing season to nearly ten months a year and plant cover crops on about one-third of their vegetable ground annually. Dairy goats play a crucial role, providing milk for cheese production and compostable material. The farm also raises hogs and laying hens, supplementing their feed with whey from the cheese-making process.
The Rest
The farm sells its products at four farmers' markets in Lincoln and Omaha, at the farm itself, and to local grocery stores and restaurants. They offer a Flex-style Farm-share program, allowing customers to pre-pay seasonally for vegetables, cheese, pork, and flowers. The urban fringe location has helped establish a strong market for their products.
