About the Farm
Background
Sykes Dairy, now Sykes Family Farm, was established in the 1950s when Vernon and Nadine Sykes bought a small dairy from Vernon's brother. Vernon operated the farm until the late 1970s when his sons, Johnny and Jeff, joined the operations. The farm expanded to 300 acres and grew a Holstein herd to 125 cows, milked twice daily. In 1992, ownership passed to Johnny and Jeff. After Vernon passed away in 1994 and Johnny in 2003, Jeff continued the operations. Economic challenges in 2018 led to selling the herd. In 2020, the farm was renamed Sykes Family Farm, continuing its 70-year heritage.
Practices
The farm raises pure-bred Jersey cows known for their creamy milk with high butterfat content. The cows are grass-fed, and the farm emphasizes the health and well-being of their animals. They provide A2/A2 raw milk and yogurt, adhering to North Carolina's raw milk production laws. The farm is committed to being good stewards of the land, ensuring sustainable and ethical farming practices.
The Rest
Sykes Family Farm offers educational resources about raw milk production and laws in North Carolina. They aim to instill confidence in their cowshare program participants and invite them to be part of their farming community. The farm also sells raw pet milk.
