About the Farm
Background
The farm was established to transform a former parking lot into a vibrant educational space. The asphalt and underlying gravel were removed, and the soil was tested for toxicity. Fresh, locally produced organic compost was used to enrich the soil, creating a fertile ground for learning and growing.
Practices
The farm employs organic farming principles, focusing on soil health through on-farm composting, crop rotation, cover crops, and low-till systems. Pest management is achieved via companion planting, crop rotation, and creating habitats for beneficial insects, while weeds are removed by hand. Waste reduction is emphasized through composting and rainwater collection.
The Rest
The farm is open year-round to the public four days a week and partners with local schools and community centers to offer free outdoor educational opportunities. A monthly schedule of events, classes, and workshops is available on the farm's Facebook page. The farm provides a hands-on learning environment that integrates well with STEM education for various grades.
