About the Farm
Background
Back Forty Bees began with just a few hives and has grown naturally over the years. Don Cole, inspired by his wife Allison's concern about colony collapse disorder, started the apiary after researching bees. Don, who grew up in rural upstate New York, had prior experience working on a farm with chickens. His initial curiosity about bees turned into a full-fledged business, providing local Virginia raw honey, bees, and handcrafted hive-related products.
Practices
The apiary emphasizes chemical-free beekeeping, focusing on the natural behavior and health of the bees. Don Cole often works with minimal protective gear to better understand and gently handle the bees. He uses a smoker to calm the bees, which helps in managing them without causing distress. The bees' behavior is closely monitored, especially during times of nectar dearth, to ensure their well-being. Don also advocates for starting new hives in the winter and suggests maintaining at least two hives to compare health and mitigate losses.
The Rest
Don Cole is also known for relocating swarms and hives that are not in ideal locations. He personally drives to Georgia to pick up package bees, ensuring their safe transport. The apiary offers local nucs and packages, along with beekeeping equipment. Don's approach to beekeeping is hands-on and educational, often sharing insights with potential beekeepers about the best practices for starting and maintaining hives.
