About the Farm
Background
For over 20 years, the founders have been growing vegetable varieties and eventually decided to share their expertise by creating a seed company. Rooted in the Great Lakes region, they specialize in seeds for short seasons adapted to the north and Midwest. The company honors seeds passed down from ancestors, aiming to nourish, connect, and inspire communities.
Practices
All seeds are open pollinated or heirloom, grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, and are public domain, allowing customers to save their own seeds. The farm is certified organic, with many seeds grown using USDA-approved organic methods. They have signed the Safe Seed Pledge, ensuring no GMOs are sold. The seeds are regionally adapted to the Midwest climate, with over 30% grown on their 130-acre certified organic farm.
The Rest
The farm hosts educational programs on seed and food sovereignty, seed growing, saving, trialing, and breeding, and offers ideas and recipes to expand the growing, cooking, and eating of a wide variety of foods. They also participate in the Ark of Taste initiative by offering over a dozen unique and threatened seed varieties. The farm features rolling hills, oak woodlands, and a vibrant community of interns, students, and volunteers. Annual events like the Harvest Festival bring the community together to celebrate food, fun, and farming.
