About the Farm
Background
The American Mulefoot Hog, once widespread in the central USA, saw its numbers decline significantly by the 1960s due to the advent of vaccines and treatments for pig diseases. By 1985, only one herd remained, maintained by Mr. R.M. Holliday in Missouri. His dedication to the breed's unique hardiness and family tradition kept it from extinction. Today, the largest herd of purebred Mulefoots in the country is maintained by Arie McFarlen and Bret Kortie of Maveric Heritage Ranch Co., from whom the foundation stock was purchased.
Practices
Mulefoot hogs are raised naturally and humanely per the standards of the Animal Welfare Institute. The pigs receive personal attention daily, are addressed by their names, and enjoy their favorite treat, alfalfa. The farm's goals include assuring the survival of the Mulefoot Hog, providing quality breeding stock, and developing nutritious pork.
The Rest
The Mulefoot pig is classified as 'critical' by The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy, with fewer than 200 in annual registration. The meat is highly sought after for its 'rosy-red beefy' color and exceptional marbling, which melts in the mouth. The farm offers gourmet meat and breeding stock, ensuring customers receive some of the finest registered purebred stock in the country.
