About the Farm
Background
Drake Family Farms began as a 4-H project in 1984 on a historic farm in West Jordan, Utah, originally purchased by Edward Drake in 1880. The farm has been continuously operated by the Drake family for over a century, earning it the Utah Century Farm designation. Daniel Drake, who studied veterinary medicine at UC Davis, expanded the herd to approximately 400 goats and now operates the farm in Ontario, California, while also being a main partner in the Utah location. The farm transitioned to a commercial operation in 2000, selling goat milk, yogurt, and cheese.
Practices
Drake Family Farms adheres to the principles of farmstead and artisan cheese-making, using milk exclusively from their own goats, which are registered with the American Dairy Goat Association. The goats, including Saanen, Nubian, Alpine, and Snubian varieties, are given individual names and treated with high standards of care. The farm emphasizes the use of high-quality milk from happy, healthy goats to produce their cheeses.
The Rest
The farm produces over eight varieties of fresh chevre and has recently introduced a mold-ripened aged cheese named Glacier. Additionally, the farm has a rich history of soap-making, with recipes and techniques passed down through generations, now enhanced with modern methods and ingredients.
